Description
This female Cardinal came to visit during an ice storm as we had put out seed for the birds. She grabbed some seed and flew into a tree to eat it and I was able to follow her and capture this image. Cardinals are our state bird, in North Carolina, and one of my favorites..
.....
Cardinals, which make up the family Cardinalidae, are passerine birds found in North and South America. These are robust, seed-eating birds with strong bills.
They are typically associated with open woodland. The sexes usually have distinctive appearances. The Northern Cardinal type species was named by colonists for the male's red body and crest, reminiscent of a Catholic cardinal's cassock and biretta.
.....
Cardinals are known as an American song bird (Cardinalis cardinalis, or Cardinalis Virginianus), of the family Fringillid, or finches. The males have loud and musical notes resembling those of a fife.
