Description
While visiting our Natural Science Center, I came upon some butterflies visiting their butterfly bushes and was able to capture this female eastern tiger swallowtail. The blue on her wings is almost iridescent. I used a texture with this photograph.
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus)(aka Tiger Swallowtail) is a unique species of swallowtail that is a quick and strong flier, gliding when able. The males are a bright yellow, while the females can exhibit two different color forms; yellow and black and black and blue. The darker form is more common in the southern states. The caterpillar is just as remarkable, it resembles a small snake with eyespots. This butterfly particularly enjoys pink, purple, and red flowers, and is a wonderful visitor to any garden.
Eastern Tiger Swallowtails are found all over, especially near water, but also in meadows, gardens, parks, and roadsides. Adult Eastern Tiger Swallowtails drink nectar from flowers. They visit many plants, both wild native plants and garden flowers. Some of those flowers include milkweed, thistles, Japanese Honeysuckle, Ironweed, and Red Clover.
