These shells washed up on the beach after a tropical storm that came though and I captured them. There were different kinds of whelk shells and other seashells all along the beach from being washed up by tropical storm Beryl the day we came to the beach. We arrived shortly after the last bands of the storm were coming through. I painted on canvas a background and then digitally painted from the photo on the computer with brushes to come up with this image.
Whelks are snails with beautiful shells. If you see something on the beach that looks like a "seashell," it's probably the shell of a whelk. There are over 50 species of whelks. Whelks have a spiraled shell which varies in size and shape. These animals can vary in size from under an inch in length (shell length) to more than 2 feet.
