We have grown sunflowers for a long time in our yard, but a visit to a huge field of the plants, was so amazing to see. This image was taken at a field out in the country near a nursery that plants them every year for people to visit and enjoy. Sunflowers really do follow the Sun. Recent information from the journal Science, shows that the sunflowers have a cirdian rhythm, an internal clock. During the day, this system sends signals to the east side of the of their stems. telling those cells to grow slightly longer. This causes the sunflower to lean.westward. During the night the message reverses and brings the sunflower back to the east. Even though they don't sleep, they have clock genes similar to those that direct the sleep/wake cycle in animals. As the stem is growing, this cycle takes place but when the stem is fully mature, it stops. The field was full of bees, birds and butterflies while we were there.

This is magnificent! I love the muted colors, yet the front flower, the focal point of the composition stands out big and bold. Wonderful capture. f/l/t
