Description
This image of this Starsister Dahlia was taken in our garden shortly after planting. It has been one of my favorite flowers and have not seen one like it in this combination since. The dark background is natural as we back up to very dense woods and so it is pretty dark in the shade behind where this is located. Taken with a 105mm Nikkor Micro/Macro lens and the dark background is a result of our dense forest of trees and shade behind our house and the settings I used. Dahlia is a genus of bushy, tuberous, herbaceous perennial plants. A member of the Asteraceae or Compositae, dicotyledonous plants, related species include the sunflower, daisy, chrysanthemum and zinnia. There are at least 36 species of dahlia, with hybrids commonly grown as garden plants. The majority of species do not produce scented flowers or cultivars. Like most plants that do not attract pollinating insects through scent, they are brightly colored, displaying most hues, with the exception of blue.
During the years 1805 to 1810 several people claimed to have produced a double dahlia. By 1826 double varieties were being grown almost exclusively, and there was very little interest in the single forms. Up to this time all the so-called double dahlias had been purple, or tinged with purple, and it was doubted if a variety untinged with that color was obtainable. Today's double Dahlia's greatly range in color and styles.
