This red-tailed hawk was seen at a wildlife prey rescue. He has been shot in his right wing and in this capture was trying to fly. He was a newer rescue by the group and his wound from a gunshot still open and while I was there watching him, started to bleed again as he tried to fly. That he was scared was evident so I stayed back to watch him. His handler was so kind and patient with him and he seemed to have bonded with her already. He will not be able to fly correctly again as needed for his life in the wild but will still be able to fly about the rescue. I spoke to him softly as he was landing and he stayed still and listened and that is how I got this image. His wings were up and he held them that way and looked at me. When I enlarged this image I can make out my shape and camera being held in his eye. That was so amazing to me to see that reflection and was humbled to be so close to one of God's majestic creations. Someday, I hope to see him again with his wing healed and him able to fly around. Red-tailed hawks make great falconers as they are not as afraid of humans, in fact can nest close to them.

There is just something about the raw beauty in a head shot of a raptor. This one has it all.
