The red poppy came to symbolize the blood shed during battle following the publication of the wartime poem βIn Flanders Fields.β The poem was written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, M.D. while serving on the front lines. ... In 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of The American Legion. Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. Following a tradition inaugurated by King George V in 1919, the day is also marked by war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries.
