While walking through the woods after a snow storm, spied this falcon had just landed on this tree limb that was covered in ice. He spotted me but I was able to capture this image before he took off. A peregrine falcon can dive up to 200 miles (323 kilometers) an hour to capture prey in flight, striking in midair with its outstretched talons, or claws. Peregrines usually hunt with either a swift chase or a fast dive. They prefer wide-open spaces, and thrive near coasts where shorebirds are common, but they can be found everywhere from tundra to deserts. Taken in North Carolina.
