Description
We were visiting Bogue Banks in the southern Outerbanks of NC, when Tropical Storm Beryl brushed the coast and caused very high waves, wind and severe beach erosion. We happened to see the rain bands come ashore and the very high rough ocean and winds. It passed pretty quickly and all became calm again, but the sand is deeply cut here and there is a 2 to 3 foot drop where you see the edge of the sand in this photo. It was interesting to capture this pelican flying into the wind and seeing some waves up to 12 feet.
.....
Tropical Storm Beryl was the strongest off-season Atlantic tropical cyclone on record to make landfall in the United States. The second tropical cyclone of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, Beryl developed on May 26 from a low-pressure system offshore North Carolina. Initially subtropical, the storm slowly acquired tropical characteristics as it tracked across warmer sea surface temperatures and within an environment of decreasing vertical wind shear.
