Description
Our city of Greensboro, NC, recently had a fundraiser for our Children's Museum's Edible Garden of a tour of their garden and also a tour of the Coop Loop that day. The Coop Loop was a tour of the many homes where owners were raising their own chickens in their back yards along with growing their own food. This image was taken at one of those homes and this is a Mahogany Favorolle hen enjoying her favorite food, the watermelon. The families on this tour keep the hens as pets and for eggs. The breed is extremely friendly and a good layer. This was a most interesting tour and we met some wonderful people. This image has been digitally painted and texture added.
Faverolles are classified as a heavy breed and have a beard, muffs, feathered feet and five toes per foot, rather than the usual four. Faverolles are well adapted both to confinement or free range. Although primarily kept today as an ornamental and exhibition breed, it remains an excellent layer. Some cocks are the quietest of all breeds and Faverolles are also known for their extreme docility. As a result, they tend to get bullied in a mixed flock for being so gentle and friendly. Because of their gentleness Faverolles have become a popular breed of chicken to keep as a pet, especially for children. They are also enjoying increasing popularity with people who keep small home flocks, who favor dual purpose breeds which are well suited to both egg production and can use as meat. Faverolles are considered to be very good layers, a well-cared for Faverolles hen will lay approximately four eggs per week.
