Description
I met this dog at a farm we visited on a tour we took to see farm animals, specifically chickens. It was a tour in our county/city where families inside the city limits are now being allowed to raise chickens in their back yards, and this start of the tour was at this farm. I was told this sweet dog was Burnese Mountain Dog and that he herded their cows, horses and chickens back to the barn. He was very affectionate and very smart dog and sat up against this fence to let me take this photo. He has beautiful markings and his coat really shined, showing his excellent health. We made friends, and I hope to go back to see him in the spring when they have the tours again. When we left, he sprinted after our car barking his goodbye. I used textures with this image to bring out his coloring and and happy look. The Bernese Mountain Dog (German: Berner Sennenhund) is a large-sized breed of dog, one of the four breeds of Sennenhund-type dogs from the Swiss Alps. Bred from crosses of Mastiffs and guard-type breeds, Bernese Mountain Dogs were brought to Switzerland by the Romans 2,000 years ago. The name Sennenhund is derived from the German Senne ("alpine pasture") and Hund (hound/dog), as they accompanied the alpine herders and dairymen called Senn. Berner (or Bernese in English) refers to the area of the breed’s origin, in the canton of Bern. This mountain dog was originally kept as a general farm dog. Large Sennenhund in the past were also used as draft animals, pulling carts. The breed was officially established in 1907. In 1937, the American Kennel Club recognized it; today, the club classifies it as a member of the Working Group. Bernese are outdoor dogs at heart, though well-behaved in the house; they need activity and exercise, but do not have a great deal of endurance. They can move with amazing bursts of speed for their size when motivated. If they are sound (no problems with their hips, elbows, or other joints), they enjoy hiking and generally stick close to their people. The breed was used as an all purpose farm dog for guarding property and to drive dairy cattle long distances from the farm to the alpine pastures. The farmers used the Berner to transport their carts of milk and cheese and were known by the locals as "Cheese Dogs."
