Description
"Blue Jay's Favorite Perch" started as a photograph I took of one of our resident Blue Jay's Fledglings in their favorite tree. This is one of the last broods of fledglings for this year. I was so happy for the parents, that they were able to raise two for their last try, as a crow came and got at least one of them from their last brood. This bird was on it's favorite perch to watch me on our deck as well as a stop to get acorns from this tree. There is competition with our local squirrels and here he/she is waiting for the squirrel to leave the tree so the bird could get the acorns. I used different effects with this image, as a painter, I wanted it to look painted as well as a pen and ink effect. Different painting brushes and pencils were used in Photoshop along with texture to get the effect that I liked. The detail on this bird having gotten all new feathers was great to use for these effects.
This common, large songbird is familiar to many people, with its perky crest; blue, white, and black plumage; and noisy calls. Blue Jays are known for their intelligence and complex social systems with tight family bonds. Their fondness for acorns is credited with helping spread oak trees after the last glacial period.
