This photograph is of the Old Mill of Guilford's wagon wheels gate. The gate is at the side of the historic building and a rock wall that was built behind the mill, is there each side of the two wheels are attached. Beaver creek, where the water comes for the mill's water wheel on the other side of the mill building, runs in front of this gate. When the water is shallow, there are stones that you can hop across to the other side where a pump house, or what was meant to be a small replica of the mill sits. There is so much to explore on the mill property. This photo was taken on the other side of the creek. Photograph with special processing using textures and digital art.
For nearly 250 years, the Old Mill of Guilford has been a fixture along Beaver Creek on the western edge of the county. Its rich history includes Cornwallis troops seizing the mill in 1781 so the British general could feed his troops during the Revolutionary War. The historic landmark has drawn thousands of tourists over the years, but these days, folks make the drive out to Oak Ridge for the flour, corn meal and muffin mix because the mill uses mostly local ingredients. The mill uses corn raised by local farmers that makes the mills famous cornmeal healthier and fresher. Local wheat also comes from local area farmers that are used in the flours and mixes they make at the mill.
