Description
A visit to our Bog Garden today yielded the beauty of spring activity awakening to the season here in NC. A natural habitat created for our city by a group of volunteers called Greensboro Beautiful, it was a joy to wander and come upon these two Mallard ducks, together on this log. They were roosting and so comfortable with each other. He protected her from other males and took her off to this place for them to rest. I waited to photograph them and captured this shot.

he Mallard (pron.: /ˈmlɑrd/ or /ˈmlərd/) or Wild Duck (Anas platyrhynchos) is a dabbling duck which breeds throughout the temperate and subtropical Americas, Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and has been introduced to New Zealand and Australia. This duck belongs to the subfamily Anatinae of the waterfowl family Anatidae. The male birds (drakes) have a glossy green head and are grey on wings and belly, while the females have mainly brown-speckled plumage. Mallards live in wetlands, eat water plants and small animals, and are gregarious. This species is the ancestor of most breeds of domestic ducks.
