Description
I met Rodney, the Diamondback Terrapin (turtle) while visiting our Natural Science Center, Sciquarium and Animal Discovery Zoo. I walked into a room that contained different kinds of reptiles. Rodney was a young terrapin and was in a large fish tank. When I walked up to him, he was sitting on a rock and watched me then dived into the water and headed my way. He was trying to climb the glass to get out to me. He was such a character that the woman taking care of the reptiles came over and spoke to me that she had not seen him like this before. I thought maybe it was the camera? I finally started talking photos of him and realized that when I looked down at him it was me he was looking at and I went back to visit several times and he knew me. Since the new Sciquarium has been built and opened I have not been back but hopefully soon will get to go and see if I can find him to say hello. Diamondbacks live in coastal salt marshes, estuaries and tidal creeks along the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts from Cape Cod, Mass., to Corpus Christi, Texas, including the Florida Keys. Seven subspecies occupy this range, with some overlap in distribution. I used some enhancements with this photo, to bring out his coloring and detail as well as present him in his best way. This image would make a great children's picture, on a wall, business or any place to make one smile at seeing his grinning face.
