During a walk though one of our local gardens, I came across this group of belladonna delphiniums. They were so unusual and beautiful light bluish color with periwinkle and purplish tones. Belladonna delphinium is a defining landscape choice because of its size and coloration. Belladonna grows in stalks as tall as four feet, with blooms that top the upper 1 to 2 feet. Belladonna flowers are small and cup- or bell-shaped, and this particular variety of delphinium blooms in a dramatic, bright shade of blue, indigo or violet. The stalks are hollow and, though they are able to support the weight of dozens of small blossoms, a strong wind easily snap the towering stems will during the peak bloom season. Belladonna delphinium can be cut fresh or dried for use in arrangements.
